JSRACS SENIOR LEARNING CENTRE

DESIGN INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA AWARDS 2017

Category : Educational Architecture

Award of Merit

This project was a clear winner amongst the jury. The level of ambition and execution is to be commended. The design places community and interaction, circulation and movement at its literal centre with classrooms all leading from a striking set piece stair and bleachers within a double height space. The environmental efficient LVL structure provides an aesthetic motif that has been repeated throughout an interior of timber veneers, bold colours and terraced geometries combining to form a modern and bright education interior. It is an exemplar space that brings high quality architecture to the suburbs of Perth.

JSRACS BEECHBORO KINDERGARTEN

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE ARCHITECTS WA CHAPTER AWARDS 2013

Category : Interior Architecture

The Kindergarten addition to the John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School in Beechboro provides children with a wonderful learning environment that is inviting, nurturing, fit for purpose, flexible and most importantly fun. The design response is a highly sophisticated and exceptionally well considered outcome. Material selections give the space a sense of warmth and natural charm while being appropriately robust and durable. The elegant detailing is well executed and the space conveys a strong sense of craftsmanship. Clever provisions for the “mess of play” include a custom designed hanging system for children’s paintings and drawings. Puzzle shaped storage units act as mobile partitions for dividing the space into a variety of areas to suit different teaching modes. The use of colour is subtle and inspires rather than dictates and the ambience created from the composition of skylights, light fixtures and coloured acoustic panels in the coffered ceiling is poetic. Clever appropriation of budget has enabled a wonderful result to be achieved within tight financial constraints and environmental attributes are intrinsic rather than applied. This project is an example for primary school teaching spaces and is a wonderful outcome for the local community and families with children in the area. A space that will undoubtedly reside in the collective memories of the children and staff that enjoy the facility.

Conceived within a sustainable framework, this kindergarten features a large-scale structural grid – the defining interior motif for the project. Internally the timber grid is lined with ecoply panels, creating a negative space into which linear lighting elements have been inserted. The grid is enlivened with squares of colour interspersed with skylights which give both playful and acoustic balance to the spaces. Colour, which lines selective walls and joinery, adds an element of joy, while playfulness comes in the form of large scale jigsaw pieces which act as both storage elements and mobile room dividers.

Judges were extremely impressed with the beautiful layering and complete compositional use of colour throughout the project. Playful, peaceful and sophisticated, the colours were pushed to the next level without being overwhelming. Plywood ceilings above successfully tied the space together. The project is a fine example of using bright colours in harmony to create an exciting environment for children without introducing the usual primary colours.

The resolution of the interior design for this project is highly sophisticated, considering it’s a new fitout restricted by the challenges of an older building. The restrained control of the project reveals a maturity beyond the designer’s years. The designer embraced the responsible role of conduit linking distant branches of the client’s offices to be merged The result is subtle yet powerful and clearly reflects the position and culture of the company as well as the clear dialogue the client had with the design practice. Successful integration of different aspects of the design is evident from the formal architectural planning, strong public area atmosphere and fun staff coffee facilities. Consummate handling of philosophical, technical and social needs of the company is evident, and similarly, environmental issues have been considered with a passion. Both the interior design and the designer himself clearly articulate the client’s ethos leading to a breathtakingly beautiful result.
